Spanish architecture agency Andrea Solé Arquitectura has specified new everyday living to the ruins of Can Tomeu, a historic Catalan building from the 1800s that is now a present day, self-sufficient household. In addition to sensitively restoring and reinforcing the remaining walls from the primary building, the architects expanded the developing footprint with an annex and inserted internet site-sensitive materials that imbue the house with a feeling of heat. The property has also been outfitted with solar panels, diesel tanks and rainwater harvesting and graywater devices for off-grid use.

Found at the entrance of the Parc All-natural de Garraf just exterior of the city of St Pere de Ribes, Can Tomeu was originally utilised for agricultural and stone-crafting applications for the Masia Corral d’en Capdet. Whilst the constructing was later deserted and deteriorated into ruins comprising only bearing walls, Can Tomeu was classified as a Cultural Asset of Regional Interest (BCIL), a designation that needs the preservation of the building’s remaining elements. Irrespective of the rigid restrictions and the poor situations of the ruins, the architects took on the challenge by meticulously rehabilitating the authentic walls and increasing the footprint by 30%.

The architects used iron mesh and concrete reinforcement to mend and join the initial stone partitions. Concrete was also employed to raise the peak of the current walls and form a new roof composition. In distinction, the exterior walls of the new annex are rendered as clean, white surfaces. Massive, timber-framed windows punctuate each the aged and new development to visually tie the buildings together, carry a sense of warmth into the property and frame exterior landscape sights. The gentle-stuffed interiors match the minimalist style method of the exteriors with a straightforward materials palette that features ceramic tiling to evoke a Mediterranean character.
“The effectiveness represents a 2nd lifestyle for the making, rediscovering the current inside areas of apparent and potent geometry that right after the intervention represent a new spatial experience,” the architects famous.
